Why I Chose the VSG

I received this question via private message on Obesity Help. I thought I’d go ahead and copy my response here for those curious.

You ask a very good question. First, I want to say that it’s great that you’re researching. This is a really big decision and you should go in with your eyes open. The best patient is an informed patient.

First, I’d been considering weight loss surgery for maybe 7 or 8 years. I didn’t do it back when I was first considering it for various reasons. The main reason being I KNEW I was not ready and it would not have worked for me then. Also, the VSG was not really an option. Maybe if it had been and I had heard about it then, I might have chosen it.

One of my local friends had an RNY with my surgeon almost 6 years ago. Now, she’s done fantastic but, I’ve watched her through the years having to take handfuls of vitamins just to absorb the nutrients she needs. I know myself and I know how hard it is for me to keep up with the minor daily medication I need to take. I’d never remember to keep taking all those vitamins. Plus, the malabsorption thing. The malabsorption of vitamins and nutrients lasts a lifetime. The malabsorption of calories? Maybe only a few years. I just did not want to deal with that, and my problem was not sweets, sure I ate them if they were there, but I don’t need to dump to remind me not to eat them. My problem was volume eating so I knew I needed a restrictive procedure.

I was going to go with the lapband but, after hearing about the sleeve and reading the lap band forum and the revision forum and seeing how many problems people were having with their bands, I knew that was not for me. Plus, it’s really not got a good track record for people who were as overweight as I started out.

I absolutely do not regret my decision. I think this is the best thing I have ever done for myself. If I had to make the decision all over again, I’d choose the sleeve again.

WLS is a very personal decision and you have to choose what’s right for you. Good luck in making your decision. If you have any other questions, just ask!

It seems as if we chose the sleeve for the same reasons. In hindsight, I’m REALLY glad because I don’t really like taking the vitamins I have to take now…I know this was a good decision.

I know what you mean. A multivitamin twice a day I can handle. Calcium twice a day I can handle. But the handfuls of vitamins? No way. And, honestly, even people who have not had weight loss surgery should probably be taking a multivitamin once a day anyway.

Sounds like my reasons exactly. 🙂

Yes, those are the same reasons I chose the VSG, too
