Affordable gym membership

I’m so happy! I finally found a local gym that does not cost an arm and a leg to join or kill you with outrageous monthly fees. Money is really tight right now, but I really need to join a gym and get in a more regimented fitness routine.

Enter Planet Fitness. The best part about my super cheap membership is I have free trainers available to me, all the time. I don’t need a trainer to workout with me all the time, but having one help me develop a strength training regime will be nice.

I’ve been so frustrated with this stall I’m in and it’s clear I need to be doing more than walking and my wall pushups. Now that I have an affordable place to work out that is less than 10 minutes away from my house, I’m happy. I’m signing up on the 15th (pay day). It’s really kind of a relief.

One Hundred Push Up Challenge

One of the things I’ve noticed over the years is I have almost no upper body strength. I’ve been trying to think of inexpensive ways to exercise and build it up because money’s tight and I can’t really afford to join a gym right now. One of my friends started doing the one hundred push up challenge and a little light went ‘ding’ in my head (yes I know lights don’t go ‘ding’ work with me here).

As I’ve been cleared for most exercise, I thought I would give this a try. The site gives several alternatives for people who have trouble doing ‘good form’ pushups. I’m taking the ‘test’ today and won’t be surprised if I can only manage to eke out five. Heck, I won’t be surprised if I can’t eke out more than three.

The program is six weeks, with three days of their push up training each week. I’m going to be doing mine Monday, Wednesday and Friday and will be posting my progress here. The following is a sample of the first day, if someone only managed five push ups:

Rest 60 seconds between each set.

Set 1: 2

Set 2: 3

Set 3: 2

Set 4: 2

Set 5: Max (at least 3).

Not too bad. Each day they gradually increase the amount of push ups you can do until you can eventually do 100. They also say you can/should retake a week if you really struggled.

So… anybody want to do this with me? Be my push up buddies?

Oh yeah, and when I complete this, I’m thinking of doing the 200 sit up challenge.

UPDATE: I’m starting this NEXT Monday. If any of you are on fat secret, I’ve set up a challenge there. http://www.fatsecret.com/challenges/100-push-ups-challenge/Home.aspx
